Outer Banks – Corolla, North Carolina

Las Vegas, Nevada

#GuideLife

I ran out of my favorite mineral sunscreen stick so I bought several more of different brands to test. Find the story eventually posted under #GuideLife. I’m also working on a couple Day in the Life stories as well.

I’m taking a quick break from work to fly to Las Vegas with a friend to relax, so in honor of that trip I’ve posted the Top 10 Worst Things to do in Las Vegas. It may be the funniest one yet. I’m also combining the last two weeks into one – this one.

And if you read my last Week on Tour you’ll know I spoke about upgrading some of my GoPro gear… and I did! I bought a mount that can hold two cameras at once (you can find the one I bought here) and, through some good ol fashioned messin’ with, I was able to attach both of my camera’s to film different views.

Tours – Fourth of July in Corolla

It’s the Fourth of July in Corolla and it is HOT with highs in the low 90’s and ridiculous humidity. The heat is amplified by the sand, which acts like an oven. To top it off, because of the insane increase in traffic on the beach, it is TORN UP. Bouncy, nasty ruts everywhere, washboard divots in the sand from people not deflating their tires and/or being too hard on the gas all at once, and stuck cars all over the place. I gleaned this photo from the hilarious FaceBook page Corolla Beach Idiots.

I picked up extra shifts so I’m doing 14 tours this week instead of my usual 9, and once I get back from Vegas, I’m doing 6 more.

Thursday: The weather was beautiful for most of the day. Warm but not hot, a breeze off the ocean. I had great, engaged guests and we had the chance to watch a skirmish between a dominant stallion and a yearling colt. Even some of the ladies got involved!

Friday: What a day for seeing baby horses. On all three of my tours we saw 3 of the 5 foals on the year (two I’ve never seen). Dove, Drum, and everybody’s favorite – Drake. Thank you Corolla Wild Horse Fund for the occasional question about hip-hop artist Drake.

Saturday: I had a lot of little kids on Saturday which made for some interesting and entertaining questions, including our question of the week. I did get another review though!

Fourth of July in Corolla and I'm ready to have fun.

I’m nothing if not ready to have a good time. I mean this Instagram Reel proves it.

Sunday: Fourth of July in Corolla traffic is NO JOKE. It usually takes me about 45 minutes (or less) to make it to work on a normal day, but today I spent an hour and a half to go 6 miles. I finally made it out of traffic just in time… to be 2 minutes late to my tour. I settled in and eventually had some great tours. For the first time since starting this website and becoming a guide I’ve started to shamelessly plug to find me online. Maybe that’ll increase traffic. Chasing dreams, baby!!

Monday: Rain. Rain everywhere. We got absolutely soaked on my afternoon tour. We did see horses however and we ended the tour early, so win/win. Short day, as our company had our Fourth of July party… err, 3rd of July party.

Las Vegas

I’m not much of a gambler, but I was invited to go to Vegas with a good friend of mine for free. How do you turn that down?

My favorite part of the trip was touring the Hoover Dam, of which you can find a review here soon. The dam is beautiful and fascinating. I highly recommend a stop here if you’re in the area and take the tour.

Tours

Friday: Three tours. Nothing spectacular. It was hot, and we did hilariously watch a horse scratch his chin on a wood post. Wild or not, it’s always fun watching animals use objects of the human world to their advantage.

Saturday: It was a day for firsts. I saw the newest foal, Donner, for the first time. I used my new GoPro rig today and though I need to work out a few issues, it was successful. Caught two different angles of a baby horse getting the zoomies! I also had a guest who teaches wildlife law at a university in Florida so we nerded out hard. It was fascinating learning even more about our horses from him through legal concepts and precedents. I’m always learning something new, it makes me a better guide.

And with Saturday gone, the fourth of July in Corolla is over. It’ll get busy again for Labor Day.

Question of the Week

“Do unicorns make rainbows?”
